Discover Sintra’s Enchanting Palaces
The mysterious “mountain of the moon”, today called Sintra, is the westernmost mountain on the European continent and is one of the most symbolic and ritualized places in Portugal. The small village that grew in the foothills is the perfect scenic representation of a nostalgic environment, with beautiful 19th century palaces and revival houses, exotic gardens and natural vegetation surrounded by fog on winter mornings.
The whole village is an attraction in itself, due to its mountainous landscape and the quantity and quality of places and museums open to visitors. This is one of the must-visit places in the Lisbon area.
Here you will find the Royal Palace of Sintra, the oldest medieval palace still standing in Portugal, the Pena Palace, a romantic building from the 19th century that came directly from the mind of Fernando II, a dreamy king of the imaginary and Quinta da Regaleira, a mysterious garden that has a symbolic language transporting us to the center of the earth for an interior renovation, typical of initiatic contexts such as alchemy, hermeticism or templarism.
After visiting the village of Sintra in the morning, the afternoon can be spent at Cabo Roca, the westernmost point of the European continent, to admire the views and end the day in the beautiful village of Cascais, a summer town chosen by the Portuguese aristocracy as leisure destination since the late 19th century.
